Earby 2 – 5 Gargrave Res

November 3, 2008

3 points were up for grabs as Gargrave made the short trip to local rivals Earby. Manager Jimmy Mc showed the team his intentions in the changing room, promising he wasn’t scared to make 3 substitutions at half time if they were needed.

This seemed to relight Gargrave’s fire as they took the lead early on in the first half with a well placed shot from Liam Jameson, there was a hint of “own goal” surrounding the strike, but manager Mc thought that giving Jameson the goal would do wonders for team morale.

Gargrave continued to have chances, but Matthew Simpson soon found out that it only takes a minute to concede a penalty, fowling an Earby player in the box. Stand in goalkeeper Dan Thompson made a valiant attempt at saving the penalty, making a sprawling dive to the bottom left corner, unfortunately the Earby player cooly slotted the ball in the bottom right, bringing the scores level.

Gargrave again took the lead after some good play from Richard “Two Forenames” Scott, Scott played the ball across the area allowing Jamie Cartman to tap the ball into the net.

To their credit, the home side refused to let Gargrave shine and managed to bring the game level yet again when an Earby player broke free of the Gargrave defence and fired an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the Gargrave goal, bringing the game level going into half time.

Strong words were issued at half time by Jimmy, reminding Gargrave that they needed to up their performance if they were to get anything from the game.

Gargrave showed plenty of patience early on in the second half, but they managed to retake the lead when Jamie Cartman broke free of the Earby defence to score his second goal of the game.

He soon had the chance to grab his hat trick when a rash challenge by an Earby defender resulted in a Gargrave penalty. Lee Barrett, now back for good with Gargrave after a long career spanning various clubs, walked forward to take the penalty. However manager Jimmy McLachlan had made a number of promises to his players at the start of the season, one being that if a player was on 2 goals, they should be allowed to take a penalty to convert the 2 goals into a hat trick, so Jamie Cartman eventually slotted home the penalty to make the score 4 – 2 to Gargrave.

Earby continued to press for a 3rd goal but the Gargrave defence stood firm. Gargrave added a fifth goal in stoppage time when a looping cross from everyones favourite asthmatic; Si Boatwright was headed into the net by 6ft 7″ striker Tom Varey.
