Gargrave 2 – 4 Long Lee Juniors

October 19, 2008

Long Lee juniors were this weeks visitors to the Dragon’s Lair for a top of the table clash that would prove to be a closely fought encounter. The Gargrave North stand was packed to the rafters with Nathan Lockey and two other people, whilst the South “Canal Side” was occupied by a group of traveling pirates.

The picturesque referee, Mr Alan Robinson blew his whistle and got the game underway. Chances were few and far between but Gargrave were more than holding their own. Unfortunately Gargrave’s defensive frailties were quickly exposed as Long Lee managed to pinch the lead.

Ben Brown squandered a good chance to bring the Dragon’s back level, but the ball would soon find it’s way into the net through Joel Timmins. Inspired by the rare sight of the Gargrave President, Mr P Watson on the sidelines, the defensive pin of linch Dan Thompson took hold of the ball and delivered what can only be described as a “Fabregas like…wasted in defence” through ball that cut Long Lee in half, allowing Gargrave’s own JT to slot the ball past the oncoming keeper.

The goal gave Gargrave a kick up the backside and they began to dominate proceedings, grabbing another goal through top scorer Ben Brown.

Unfortunately Gargrave’s defence was again found to be lacking when, against the run of play Long Lee scored 2 goals just before the half time interval.

Manager Luke Boatwright’s half time team talk proved somewhat misguided and costly, as he urged his Gargrave players to “Go into those tackles 100%, if you don’t go in 100% you’ll end up breaking a leg”. Shortly after that Gargrave midfielder Oliver Hurst went into a 50/50 tackle and gave it 100%…the game was delayed for around 20 minutes whilst the ambulance took him away to the hospital. [Source]

The game restarted and it took a while for both teams to re-find their feet after the long stoppage. Gargrave refused to give in and almost snatched an equalizer through Joel Timmins, Liam Jameson and GEOFF.

Unfortunately for the home side Long Lee scored a 4th as Gargrave pushed for the equalizer and they managed to achieve a feat that has so far only been acomplished by St George*, they managed to slay the dragons.

Next week see’s Rolls Royce make the journey to the dragon’s lair, where Gargrave will be looking to show they do indeed have plenty of bouncebackability and progress to the next round of the cup.
