Gargrave AFC Reserves 3 – 2 Bingley Town FC

April 12, 2009

This was the Reserves last league game of the season and initially it looked like it would be the hardest. The Craven Leagues new ruling which deems a player ineligible to play in the Reserve Squad if they have played in six or more games for their first team combined with some last minute cry offs meant the squad facing Bingley Town comprised of just ten men. Bingley Town needed a win to keep them out of relegation and so keeper Adam Hudson was warned he could be in for a busy day! Manager Jimmy McLachlan joined the defence alongside rugby player/fell runner Matthew Hurst with the experienced defender Aidie Eyles acting as their mentor.

The opening moves of the game were scrappy with neither side looking particularly settled though Hudson looked confident in goal despite his earlier warnings. Mattie Simpson came close but it was a close range power shot from Bingley which opened the scoring. Was this the opening of the floodgates?

Gargrave pushed forwards and Jonathan Chapman almost levelled, Simpson played through to Richard Scott but the whistle was blown for offside. Lone ranger Simpson had goal in sight when he faced a one on one with the keeper and a brave lob levelled. Bingleys frustration began to show as Gargraves ten men began to play as a unit despite some of the players inexperience.

The second half opened with Richard Scott playing a long ball through to the pacey Simpson who again had only the keeper between him and the goal, he expertly rounded him to place the ball in the corner of the net. Scott almost had goal in sight himself but over ran the ball and then a longe range shot from him just skimmed the bar. A diving header from Bingley levelled the score at 2-2.

Despite the heat of the day the Gargrave players gave their all and continued to push forwards, Bevan Bolland had a good game, passing the ball with composure and at times playing a defensive role too but it was to be Mattie Simpsons day as he notched up a hat-trick, yet another  one on one with the Bingley keeper.  3-2 to the hosts.

A great result for Gargrave with the ten men squad gaining in the circumstances their finest result of the season.

Got something to say?
