Gargrave AFC Reserves 3 – 2 Rolls Royce FC

February 1, 2009

Gargrave got off to a dream start when a Mattie Simpson free kick found the back of the net on the two minute mark. However any fluency in play was then halted by the cruel wind and arctic bite, much of the ball play was in the air with little passing to feet from either side. An easy flick through from Rolls found an un-marked player who slotted the ball past the keeper to level the scores. The return of Chris Manger and a change of position for Richard Scott from left wing to centre back added strength to the Gargrave defence who kept the scoreline at 1-1 as the half time whistle blew.

A soft goal early on in the second half gave Rolls a 2-1 lead. Gargrave began to have spells of playing better football and a searching long range  cross came close from Mattie Simpson. Tom Varey made no mistake with a well controlled lob, there was a touch from the keeper but not enough to keep the ball out of the net, levelling the scores again. Both sides worked hard to create the winning goal and it was an on form Simpson who weaved his way through the Rolls defence, a touch to Sam Ashby who in turn flicked the ball back to Simpson who placed the ball neatly on target. Rolls responded with attacks on goal but keeper Adam Hudson put in some heroic saves to maintain the hosts lead and earn himself the man of the match award. Gargrave had a couple more attempts on goal but were content with a 3-2 win over the top of the table, not the best performance from them but nevertheless  a valuable three points gained.
