Norman Pratt Trophy Quarter Final Result:

February 23, 2009

Gargrave AFC Reserves  3  -  4  Rimington AFC Reserves

Gargrave Reserves knew they were in for a tough game when they were drawn against the holders of the Craven FA Norman Pratt Trophy, Rimington Reserves. However as past winners of the trophy back in 2005 and also in 2006 this on paper was going to be a close encounter.

Rimington Reserves were a well disciplined and organised side and this was to pay them dividends almost from the off when a good  move split the Gargrave defence and their keeper Stewart Wilson was given little chance. Gargrave began to put in some better moves and Matthew Simpson was given a chance on goal but his shot went over. The  keeper was kept on his toes as Rimington attacked,Wilson saved,Rimington hit the woodwork, defender Aidie Eyles blocked a shot off the goal line but finally Rimington shot from close range to take a 2-0 lead. Midfielder Simon Boatwrights long range pin point free kick found the head of Tom Varey but the resulting header was just inches wide.Nick Manger making a welcome return to the club after a long lay off was working hard up front and this paid off as he brought Gargrave back into the game with a close range shot. 2-1 at the break.

Gargrave returned after the break knowing now that there was little to choose between the two sides. Tom Varey continued to push hard on goal and some well worked moves saw his shot go just wide of target. Rimington hit the bar at the other end of play. The visitors were awarded a penalty which was well saved by the keeper but disappointingly the resulting rebound created a third goal for Rimington. Gargrave continued to push for another opening making Rimington work hard. An exquisite  free kick was taken by Richard Scott which instilled the confidence back into the Gargrave game as soon as it stroked the side of the net . The game was back on! The final whistle was fast approaching as Gargrave were awarded another free kick, Scotty had to be the choice to take it,with shouts of ” the same again” that is just what he did! – another exquisite shot- Scotty the Hero. However as they say all good things come to an end and with Gargrave thoughts on extra time and only a couple of minutes of play left, Rimington strove to the other end of play and scored the winning goal. A disappointing end for Gargrave but a decent game of football with two fabulous goals from Scotty and a debut goal for the returning Nick Manger.
