Division Two League Cup….

January 29, 2011

Gargrave Reserves  1  -  4  Earby Town

This was certainly not a case of the luck of the draw when next to the bottom of the table Gargrave Reserves had to face top of the table Earby Town in the first round of the Division Two cup. However Gargrave did not allow Earby to have a run away victory, they gave the visitors more than a run for their money. The first goal for Earby came after the ball was well controlled by their striker who placed it neatly in the back of the net on the ten minute mark. A shot from Josh Prell could have levelled but he was just offside, Aidie Eyle`s free kick was headed away by the Earby defence and a good effort from Lee Dent was just wide of the mark. Luke Maude looked confident in goal but a scrambled shot in the goalmouth on the 43rd minute just beat him. 2-0 to the leaders in Division Two at the break.

A free kick from substitute Chris Cox went just wide in the opening exchanges of the second half whilst Earby scored their third after a break away when the shot was placed beyond the keepers reach. Maude parried a shot over the bar soon after but the resulting corner allowed Earby to score their fourth. Gargrave did not give in and continued to press for a consolation goal and their pressure in the box paid off when they forced the Earby defence to concede an own goal. A good all round team performance from a young, battling Gargrave squad with right back Richard Lord having an outstanding game.

The two teams meet up again next week at Earby recreation ground for a league game.

Skipton LMS 3 – 3 Gargrave AFC

January 24, 2011

Bottom of the table Gargrave surprised LMS with their spirited performance and return to form. They took the lead in the first half when Ben Brown scored after a one on one with the LMS keeper. Gargrave continued to push for goal and were denied a bigger lead when two efforts were cleared from the line. The visitors defence held firm giving LMS no clear cut chances.

LMS returned in the second half and gave a stronger performance, scoring a second goal to give them a slender 2-1 lead. Gargrave levelled through defender Matt Brennand with a header from a corner ball. LMS took the lead again but Gargrave pushed forwards and scored to level through Paul Wilkin with five minutes to go. A well deserved point from a good all round team performance with Richard Orme gaining the man of the match award for Gargrave.

Cup News for the First team….

January 17, 2011

A small number of Craven FA Games went ahead on Saturday. Unfortuantely the Reserve team game against Embsay Reserves was one that fell foul of the weather, therefore their quarter final Norman Pratt trophy game will now take place at Embsay on Saturday 19th February. 2.p.m kick off. ( please note this game is not a Craven League game, the two teams will still play league games and they are due to meet for one of those at Gargrave on Saturday 22nd January ).

The second round of the Craven FA Craven cup fixture between Barnoldswick Town 2nds and Grassington did go ahead with Barnoldswick the runner away winners with a 5-0 scoreline. Baroldswick Town will play host to the Gargrave first team in the quarter final stages of the cup on Saturday 19th February. 2.p.m kick off.

Gargrave AFC 0 – 1 Embsay FC

January 16, 2011

Gargrave`s decision to leave a covering of grass on the pitch during the autumn months paid dividends on Saturday with the game against Embsay able to go ahead despite the heavy rain throughout Friday night and Saturday. Both teams were delighted to finally get a game played when so many others in the league were cancelled due to their waterlogged pitches.

Gargrave took control from the start with neat interplay and attacking moves. Christian Moon had a shot headed away by an Embsay defender and Matt Brown saw a shot go just wide. Embsay were gifted a rare goal scoring opportunity from an otherwise resolute defence but they fluffed it. Simon Boatwright shot wide and a shot from Moon was easily saved. The Gargrave keeper, Adam Hudson made two heroic saves just before the half time whistle blew to keep the score at 0-0.

The home side dominated the first twenty minutes of the second half with more attacking play but the final touches were too tentative , either just not precise enough or lacking any real power. Matt Brown came the closest to taking his side into a lead when the his strike hit the bar.Paul Wilkin, Ben Brown and Richard Orme were all unlucky not to get on the score sheet. Embsay were given few attempts to even get close on goal. The Gargrave defence all played well and Embsay acknowledged this when they awarded defender Matthew Brennand with the man of the match award. A rare break saw the visitors hit the bar but Gargrave continued to push forwards with another three shots just wide of target, plus a free kick from Orme and a shot from Matt Brown easily saved. A point each looked likely from the game though Gargrave deserved the lions share but nothing is certain until the final whistle blows and with five minutes to go Embsay substitute Ian Piper slotted the ball into the bottom corner to give Embsay victory.

A disappointing result for Gargrave but a great improvement in their overall game.

Apologies to all players and officials for the lack of water supply to the changing rooms but also a thank you to them for their understanding of the situation.
