Five attempts on goal saw shots go marginally wide or just over, player Manager Matt Brown hit the post, five more attempts were just wide of target again. Finally with minutes to go the conscientious Matt Brown deservedly scored the winner for his team. A good all round performance worthy of a victory. Joel Timmins was man of the match for Gargrave.

Gargrave AFC 1 – 1 Rolls Royce FC

October 5, 2009

The wind was the dominant factor in the game between Gargrave and the Premier Division leaders Rolls Royce FC. Gargrave scored straight from the whistle after Joel Timmins had gained possession allowing Ben Brown to neatly place the ball into the corner of the net. An overhead kick on the turn from Timmins went just wide whilst Rolls over ran the ball causing just too an acute angle for a precise shot. Keeper Stuart Wilson produced a couple of excellent saves to prevent Rolls levelling but a curling corner aided by the strong wind was just nudged over the line for the visitors to equalise.

The wind continued to gust but it was Gargrave who overcame the conditions, having the best of play, keeping the ball on the ground and passing well but that winning goal would just not come.

Al Tudhope was the man of the match for Gargrave with his tireless running which caused problems for the opposition both in defence and attack.

Northern Plant Hire Trophy-first round….

September 28, 2009

Gargrave AFC  3  -  1   Embsay FC

Cup holders Gargrave were hosts to Embsay in the first round of the Northern Plant Hire Trophy competition. The two teams met last season in the semi final stages when Gargrave just had the edge to win 2-1.

Embsay opened the scoring but Ben Brown levelled with a superb free kick which curled into the corner of the net. Joel Timmins came close but a cruel bounce just denied the opportunity to take the lead. Greenwoods shot across goal at the other end was just wide whilst the lively Al Tudhope`s header went just over the bar. 1-1 at half time

Gargrave soon pulled ahead at the re-start with a goal of the season from Timmins. The strong breeze continued to cause problems for both sides but  neat passing moves from Joel Timmins to Geoff Rotherham gave Christian Moon the opportunity to head in the third and final goal of the game for Gargrave to enjoy a 3-1 win.

Craven FA Challenge Cup: Gargrave AFC 1 – 6 Rimington FC

September 22, 2009

Current holders of the FA Challenge Cup, high fliers Rimington were taken by surprise when Gargrave scored just minutes into the game. Ben Brown took his time and neatly placed the goal into the corner of the net. The hosts were in control for much of the next twenty minutes with keeper Stewart Wilson only troubled once and a save at feet kept Gargrave in the lead.

A close range goal from Rimington levelled and this was the catalyst in the game. Indecision in defence led to Rimington increasing their lead by 3-1 at the half time whistle. A goal mouth scramble led to a fourth with a fifth following shortly. Saves from keeper Wilson helped to keep the score at 5-1 but an unfortunate own goal was to increase Rimingtons tally to six.

Gargrave AFC 3 – 1 Long Lee Juniors

September 6, 2009

Gargrave AFC   3  -  1  Long Lee Juniors

This was a meeting of last seasons top two teams in the Premiership . Long Lee had the upper hand last year when they took the league title, leaving Gargrave in runners up spot.

Long Lee were the first to score from the Penalty spot, twenty minutes into the game. Ben Brown levelled and then put his side ahead with a second goal after a mistake by the Long Lee keeper.

The visitors attacked but the Gargrave troops were well marshalled by their Army captain, midfielder Geoff Rotherham who earned himself the man of the match award .A comprehensive win was then finalised when the second of the Brown duo, Matt, scored with fifteen minutes left to play.

An excellent win for Gargrave, with a good solid all round team performance.

Gargrave 4 – 3 Skipton LMS

August 30, 2009

Gargrave  were hit badly by player unavailablility on Bank Holiday Saturday and this forced the cancellation of the Reserve game . The first team game was played with just the basic squad of eleven players.

Player ManagerMatt Brown was the first to test the visiting keeper. LMS hit the post but made no mistake with the rebound. Joel Timmins, Richard Orme, Matt Brown and Oliver Hurst all had attempts on goal but shots were either just wide or saved. LMS scored a second just before the break.

Though Gargrave were giving the visitors a game and a half it was LMS who scored once more taking a 3-0 lead. Gargrave kept their discipline and focus whilst LMS seemingly thought they had the game in the bag. Timmins went close. Matt Brown passed the ball through to his brother Ben who scored from eight yards. LMS rattled the bar. A sweet pass from Joel Timmins to Paul Wilkin saw a neat tap in find the back of the net to bring the game to the boil. A long low strike from Ben Brown levelled the scores 3-3. The come back Kings could taste victory. Superb play from Oliver Hurst was rewarded as he scored the winning goal moments before time. Defender Dan Thompson earned the man of the match award whilst Luke Howsen was impressive for LMS.

Pendle Athletic 7 – 3 Gargrave AFC

August 26, 2009

This was not one of Gargraves finest performances though they did take the lead through a  Joel Timmins goal. Pendle levelled. Sam Watson put the visitors ahead again but the floodgates opened as Pendle scored five in a row! Gargrave did manage to pull one back through Al Tudhope but Pendle had the final word as they scored the last goal of the game.

A disappointing result for last years runners up in the Premiership but on the night Pendle were the better stronger side.
