Gargrave Reserves 0 – 5 Cowling FC

September 22, 2008

Gargrave Reserves were hosts to the Division One leaders, Cowling on Saturday.

It was soon evident that Cowling were a strong footballing unit but Gargrave were not phased and they were the first to break the defences when Tom Vareys shot rattled the bar. However ten minutes into the game the visitors power shot gave stand in keeper Andrew Foulds little chance. Some awesome tackling from man of the match Chris Manger kept further attempts on goal blocked.

A one goal deficit at the break still saw Gargrave in with a chance but Cowling came out in the second half with a must win/clean sheet mentality. A break away goal which outpaced the defence was soon followed by a third from a goal mouth scramble. Gargraves endeavours seemed to have accounted for little and motivation began to fade as a fourth goal came from a defensive error. The fifth and final goal of the game was the result of a penalty.

Again always some positives to work on, with sterling performances from the lively Matty Simpson, Jamie Cartman and promising new player Jamie Rotherham.

No Division One game next week ( Saturday 27th Sept ).

Gargrave FC Reserves 2 – 2 Settle Utd

September 11, 2008

Gargrave Reserves took Settle by surprise in  their return game on Wednesday 10th September. The first encounter a few weeks ago was a harsh lesson for Gargrave who had just begun to form their squad and Settle celebrated with an 11-0 win.

The early pressure came from the hosts and United soon realised this was no easy ride. However the latter scored the first goal of the game through a close range header. Tom Varey came close just before half time  skilfully trapping  the ball, but his shot went just wide. Young Mattie Simpson, maturing by the game and playing some great football was rewarded with his first goal of the season to level. Richard Scott denied Settle the lead when he headed off the line. Good passing moves allowed debutant Jamie Cartman to notch up his first of the season. There was end to end action as both teams battled hard in the rapidly fading light. Richad Scott shot just wide of goal while at the other end keeper Adam Hudson made an excellent save at feet. Settle did level through a penalty but were given a big surprise from a more resolute and settled side than they encountered in their first match.

Gargrave Reserves 2 – 0 Bradley FC

August 28, 2008

Gargrave looked a much more balanced side in their second game of the season. The defence remained solid, well marshalled by the experienced Adrian Eyles and complemented by a solid performance from Richard Scott. The young legs of Mattie Simpson in attack caused many a problem for the oppositions back men.

Gargrave scored a goal in each half. The first came from Harry Thompson, a one on one with the keeper,  slotted into the bottom left of the net. The second goal came courtesy of assistant manager Sam Ashby with a well placed header.

Settle United 12 – 0 Gargrave Res

August 28, 2008

The reserve squad knew their game against former East Lancashire side Settle United was always going to be their toughest challenge of the season. The players had not had the advantage of any friendly games and this was the first time they had been on a pitch together. There was a double whammy at the eleventh hour when one of the clubs regular keepers was unavoidably held up and could not get to the match. Midfielder Andrew Foulds bravely stepped into the breach.

Settle were always in control but Gargrave battled on in a game which the debut players and their aching limbs will remember for a long time. Man of the match was Simon Boatwright playing in his eleventh consecutive season for the club ( do not let his youthful good looks deceive you ). Despite the scoreline there were some positive performances and new manager Jimmy McLachlan looks forward to the next game which is on Wednesday evening, 27th August, at home to Bradley. Kick Off 6.30.p.m.
