Gargrave Reserves 5 – 1 Skipton Town FC

January 21, 2012

Gargrave Reserves were back to winning form  after a couple of lack lustre performances. The weather and ground conditions were far from perfect on Saturday with gale force winds and driving rain, the latter not welcome on an already heavy pitch. Gargrave took command of the game from the off and allowed Skipton Town very little possession throughout the ninety minutes. Man of the match  Harry Thompson opened the scoring with a well placed goal on the half hour mark. Player manager Jonathan Chapman soon added a second and John Beckwiths long low strike just before the break gave Gargrave Reserves a comfortable lead at the mid point of the game. Harry Thompson scored his second goal to give his side a 4-0 lead. Skipton Town with a rare foray through the Gargrave defence scored with a long low shot. Substitute Oliver Wild was unlucky when his shot went wide but Liam Cartman made no  mistake with a good finish in the final minutes to give Gargrave Reserves a 5-1 victory. A well deserved result down to a good all round team performance. The two teams meet again on Saturday ( January 28th ) in the first round of the Division Two league cup, kick off 1.30.p.m at Skipton Town.

Gargrave Reserves 3 – 3 Barnoldswick Barons FC

January 14, 2012

Barnoldswick Barons had the first shot on goal just two minutes into the opening half but it was well saved by keeper, Martin Eyles. John Beckwith had a chance for Gargrave with a one on one with the keeper but he was a stride too short. A lobbed shot from Beckwith hit the bar and Tom Varey was on hand to tap in the rebound from close range to notch up the first goal on the twenty minute mark. Barons almost levelled with a low crossing shot which went just wide. The second half of play saw both teams eager for a win. The visitors were soon rewarded when they scored an equaliser from close range. Gargrave were quick to reply and Varey scored his second of the game after a goal mouth scramble. Barnoldswick Barons made the score level again at 2-2 after a superb free kick found the back of the net . Pressure was put on both defences with some good attacking play. Man of the match Harry Thompson played a fine lob to Tom Varey who headed the ball into the net to claim his hat trick. A couple of minutes from time a penalty was awarded to the visitors for a hand ball and they made no mistake with the resulting shot to level the scores once more. Final score 3-3.

Oakworth FC 1 – 2 Gargrave AFC

January 14, 2012

Gargrave maintained their 100% unbeaten run in 2012 with a hard fought victory over Oakworth in a bottom of the table nine pointer.                         Oakworth started brightly but failed to create any meaningful chances and it was Gargrave who took the lead with a dreamy through ball from James French which fell to the feet of veteran striker Ben Brown who calmly slotted the ball past the keeper. The second half opened with both teams looking for the second elusive goal of the game and it was eventually Oakworth who supplied it. A shot was deflected into the path of the Oakworth striker , he squared the ball to his strike partner who tapped the ball into an open net. This angered manager Brown – two passionate substitutions were made with James Walker and Simon Boatwright replaced by Josh Town and Andy Seddon and the two substitutes combined well to create Gargraves winning goal of the game. Town played a pinpoint cross to attacking midfielder Seddon who calmly slotted home with a first touch finish. Oakworth almost snatched an equaliser from a corner, but divine intervention from a higher power stopped the ball going in the net. Man of the match for Gargrave was the bubbly Richard Orme.

Gargrave Reserves 2 – 5 Ingrow and Worth Valley FC

January 7, 2012

Despite the torrential rain in the days leading up to the game the pitch was in a reasonable condition though it did become increasingly heavy as the game progressed. The wind had a strong influence on much of the game . Ingrow were playing with the wind in their favour in the first half and a diving header from a cross created the first goal for them. A second almost came from a goalmouth scramble. Tom Varey had the first chance for the hosts but after some good passing play it was Matthew Simpson who levelled the score with a well placed header. Some good through balls from man of the match Harry Thompson gave Gargrave the opportunity to increase their lead, Matthew Simpson latched onto one, passed to John Beckwith who scored to take a 2-1 lead from close range. Simpson via the same delivery then had a chance with a one on one with the agile Ingrow keeper but luck was against him.

Gargrave went out in the second half expecting a wind assisted win but an excellent strike from Ingrow saw them level the score. A good shot from Beckwith was saved by the impressive Ingrow keeper who was awarded the man of the match for the visitors. A close range goal took the West Yorkshire side into the lead 2-3. The keeper made another good save from a Harry Thompson shot whilst at the other end of play Ingrow increased their lead to 2-4. Quick reactions again from the visiting keeper saw him save another Gargrave shot whilst a defensive error gifted Ingrow their fifth and final goal of the game. Gargrave continued to press for another goal with a shot going wide and another strike hitting the bar.

Barnoldswick Barons 0 – 3 Gargrave Reserves

December 3, 2011

Gargrave returned to winning form on Saturday when they visited Barnoldswick Barons at Victory Park. The first goal came on the half hour mark when Tom Varey crossed the ball and Liam Cartman fired home. The game remained pretty close but a solid Gargrave defence thwarted any of the Barons chances. The visitors second goal came fifteen minutes from the end of play when John Beckwith latched onto a good through ball and finished well. Tom Varey scored the third from a free kick which he curled into the top corner of the net. Man of the match for Gargrave was Ben Wilson.

The squad visit Skipton Town on Saturday ( 10th December ) for the first round of the League Cup. Please note early kick off of 1.30.p.m.

Gargrave Reserves 3 – 5 Grassington Reserves

November 28, 2011

Bad playing conditions brought Gargrave`s unbeaten record to an abrupt end on Saturday. A heavy pitch, continual rain and strong winds caused problems for both sides. Man of the match John Beckwith had the first chance but his shot was straight at the keeper, he passed the rebounding shot to Liam Cartman who from close range opened the scoring. Beckwith added the host`s second but Grassington soon levelled the scores. A good block from defender Aidie Eyles stopped Grassington from taking the lead. Both sides worked hard up to the half time whistle.

Grassington extended their lead to 3-2 , Gargrave continued to press forward but it was Grassington who scored from close range, and then a header shortly afterwards appeared to take the game beyond their reach. The fresh legs of the substitutes brought some hope and Beckwith scored on the turn, but it was too little too late.

Craven FA Norman Pratt Cup :

November 20, 2011

Grassington Reserves  0  -  4  Gargrave Reserves

An even first half of play saw both sides creating scoring opportunites but the scoreline remained at 0-0.

A set piece, with a free kick from Harry Thompson found John Beckwith who opened the scoring. Five minutes later a good finish by Liam Cartman gave Gargrave a 2-0 lead who from there on in were in control of the game. A further two from Beckwith completed his hat trick.

Gargrave AFC 0 – 1 Oakworth FC

November 14, 2011

Gargrave changed keepers a total of three times in a lack lustre game on a heavy pitch. The regular keeper was unavailable so striker Ben Brown donned the keepers jersey first, brother Matt took a knock so they changed positions. Neither the home or away keepers were called upon much in the first half with both defences stopping any real chances.

The second half saw Matt forced to leave the field with his injury so James Walker took over in the nets. Again the defences worked hard and a  header off the line by centre back  Dan Thompson gave the hosts a chance of a share of the points. Oakworth hit the bar and then two minutes from time they were awarded a free kick, the long range shot was headed into the back of the net. Disappointment for Gargrave when a share of the points would have been a fairer reflection of the game. Man of the match for Gargrave was mid fielder Richard Orme.

Rolls Royce Reserves 4 – 8 Gargrave Reserves

November 14, 2011

There was end to end action in this game as the scoreline reflects, a dozen goals in total, with three quarters of them scored by Gargrave who were 2-0 up early on. Rolls came back into the game and but were thwarted by some excellent work by the Gargrave keeper Stewart Wilson. There was a hat trick for Tom Varey, man of the match Matthew Simpson scored a couple, player manager Jonathon Chapman also netted  two and John Beckwith found the back of the net with one of his shots.
