Gargrave AFC

Bingley Town FC 0 – 1 Gargrave AFC

February 27, 2012

Gargrave travelled to Bingley knowing that a win would cement a more respectable mid table position and help to keep their 2012 unbeaten run on course.

It was to prove a difficult task however with veteran striker Ben Brown otherwise engaged with a log cabin in Lincoln meaning that last weeks hat trick hero, but not man of the match ,James French, was left to plough a lone furrow in his role as lone striker.

The game started with no corner flags much to the annoyance of Andy Seddon, this was soon rectified.

An even first half meant that neither side could take control of the game or create any meaningful chances but the deadlock was broken on the half hour when prolific goal scoring midfielder Dan Thompson capitalised on some hesitant defending to find himself one on one with the keeper. The seasoned finisher made no mistake and calmly slotted the ball past the Bingley keeper.

Half time arrived with neither side creating any further chances. Gargrave were forced into a substitution when their only recognised striker, James French had to leave the field of play with what looked like a mild case of polio. He was replaced by Brenners Dads friend, Chris. Chris ploughed a lone furrow up front.

Bingley pushed for an equaliser but were unable to break down Gargraves strong rear guard defences.

In what proved to be a defining moment to the game, rugged midfielder Simon Boatwright was forced to leave the field of play with what looked like another case of mild polio most likely caught from James French. He was replaced by Tom “sometimes I get a lift to the game with big Jim” Kaye and it was in the dying minutes that Kaye proved his worth and booked a place in Gargrave folk lore when a Bingley header bounced over the head of new goalkeeper, Brenners Dads friend, Craig, and was about to go over the line when Kaye rose like a salmon and cleared the ball off the line, sealing Gargraves victory.

Embsay Reserves 2 – 5 Gargrave Reserves

February 27, 2012

Gargrave started slowly but soon maintained much of the possession but again were missing some of their chances. A mix up in defence allowed Embsay to score the opening goal. Ten minutes later Gargrave levelled through player manager Jonathan Chapman. A defensive error by Embsay early on in the second half  allowed John Beckwith to score with a good finish. Gargraves third goal of the game was via a header across goal from Beckwith which was neatly finished by Harry Thompson. Substitute Liam Cartman scored the fourth goal from the edge of the area. Embsay scored a consolation goal but Gargrave took the points well beyond their reach with a late goal from Tom Varey.

Ingrow and Worth Valley FC 1 – 0 Gargrave Reserves

February 19, 2012

Gargrave Reserves were unlucky to come away without any points from this game. They had much of the possession and plenty of goal scoring opportunites but were thwarted by the Ingrow keeper. Ingrow took the lead twenty minutes from time with a close range goal, one of their few chances in the game. John Beckwith was man of the match for Gargrave.

Gargrave AFC 4 – 0 Bingley Town FC

February 19, 2012

It was a clean sheet for Ben Heap one of Gargrave`s old keepers returning for his debut game of the season.  Gargrave had the best of the attacking play in the first half . A lone run from James French and a resulting intelligent lob notched up the first goal for the home side. Bingleys chances on goal were few and their first real effort came on the half hour mark but Gargraves returning hero was in control. A one on one with Heap went wide and Al Tudhope was unlucky when his shot went straight to the keeper. The dynamic Simon Boatwright and man of the match defender turned midfielder Dan Thompson combined well in the middle and provided some good through balls. James French scored his second of the game from close range just before the break. French continued to press for goal and was soon rewarded with his hat trick. Bingley went down to ten men after a second yellow card offence. Gargrave continued with their attacking play and a powerful shot from Al Tudhope rattled the bar. Matthew Brennand took advantage of a static Bingley defence with a close range shot which sealed his sides solid 4-0 win.

Skipton Town FC 2 – 6 Gargrave Reserves

January 28, 2012

Gargrave Reserves had a comprehensive win over Skipton Town FC in the first round of the Division Two cup on Saturday. Gargrave started strongly but could not convert their chances and it was  Skipton Town who opened the scoring with a well taken goal. John Beckwith levelled with a tap in after the ball was squared from a run down the by line by Harry Thompson. It was a case of deja vous with Gargraves second but this time the ball was squared to Thomas Varey who also scored with a tap in. Gargrave remained the dominant force.    Town pulled a goal back in the second half of play but Gargrave soon took the lead again when Oliver Wild claimed his first goal of the season from a neat finish in the box. Harry Thompson rounded the keeper to slot home Gargraves fourth goal and Liam Cartman latched onto a through ball for the visitors fifth. Substitute Ben Wilson created the final goal of the game with a fine run through which then fell at the feet of John Beckwith. Skipton Town 2 – 6 Gargrave Reserves.

Gargrave Reserves 5 – 1 Skipton Town FC

January 21, 2012

Gargrave Reserves were back to winning form  after a couple of lack lustre performances. The weather and ground conditions were far from perfect on Saturday with gale force winds and driving rain, the latter not welcome on an already heavy pitch. Gargrave took command of the game from the off and allowed Skipton Town very little possession throughout the ninety minutes. Man of the match  Harry Thompson opened the scoring with a well placed goal on the half hour mark. Player manager Jonathan Chapman soon added a second and John Beckwiths long low strike just before the break gave Gargrave Reserves a comfortable lead at the mid point of the game. Harry Thompson scored his second goal to give his side a 4-0 lead. Skipton Town with a rare foray through the Gargrave defence scored with a long low shot. Substitute Oliver Wild was unlucky when his shot went wide but Liam Cartman made no  mistake with a good finish in the final minutes to give Gargrave Reserves a 5-1 victory. A well deserved result down to a good all round team performance. The two teams meet again on Saturday ( January 28th ) in the first round of the Division Two league cup, kick off 1.30.p.m at Skipton Town.

Gargrave Reserves 3 – 3 Barnoldswick Barons FC

January 14, 2012

Barnoldswick Barons had the first shot on goal just two minutes into the opening half but it was well saved by keeper, Martin Eyles. John Beckwith had a chance for Gargrave with a one on one with the keeper but he was a stride too short. A lobbed shot from Beckwith hit the bar and Tom Varey was on hand to tap in the rebound from close range to notch up the first goal on the twenty minute mark. Barons almost levelled with a low crossing shot which went just wide. The second half of play saw both teams eager for a win. The visitors were soon rewarded when they scored an equaliser from close range. Gargrave were quick to reply and Varey scored his second of the game after a goal mouth scramble. Barnoldswick Barons made the score level again at 2-2 after a superb free kick found the back of the net . Pressure was put on both defences with some good attacking play. Man of the match Harry Thompson played a fine lob to Tom Varey who headed the ball into the net to claim his hat trick. A couple of minutes from time a penalty was awarded to the visitors for a hand ball and they made no mistake with the resulting shot to level the scores once more. Final score 3-3.

Oakworth FC 1 – 2 Gargrave AFC

January 14, 2012

Gargrave maintained their 100% unbeaten run in 2012 with a hard fought victory over Oakworth in a bottom of the table nine pointer.                         Oakworth started brightly but failed to create any meaningful chances and it was Gargrave who took the lead with a dreamy through ball from James French which fell to the feet of veteran striker Ben Brown who calmly slotted the ball past the keeper. The second half opened with both teams looking for the second elusive goal of the game and it was eventually Oakworth who supplied it. A shot was deflected into the path of the Oakworth striker , he squared the ball to his strike partner who tapped the ball into an open net. This angered manager Brown – two passionate substitutions were made with James Walker and Simon Boatwright replaced by Josh Town and Andy Seddon and the two substitutes combined well to create Gargraves winning goal of the game. Town played a pinpoint cross to attacking midfielder Seddon who calmly slotted home with a first touch finish. Oakworth almost snatched an equaliser from a corner, but divine intervention from a higher power stopped the ball going in the net. Man of the match for Gargrave was the bubbly Richard Orme.

Gargrave Reserves 2 – 5 Ingrow and Worth Valley FC

January 7, 2012

Despite the torrential rain in the days leading up to the game the pitch was in a reasonable condition though it did become increasingly heavy as the game progressed. The wind had a strong influence on much of the game . Ingrow were playing with the wind in their favour in the first half and a diving header from a cross created the first goal for them. A second almost came from a goalmouth scramble. Tom Varey had the first chance for the hosts but after some good passing play it was Matthew Simpson who levelled the score with a well placed header. Some good through balls from man of the match Harry Thompson gave Gargrave the opportunity to increase their lead, Matthew Simpson latched onto one, passed to John Beckwith who scored to take a 2-1 lead from close range. Simpson via the same delivery then had a chance with a one on one with the agile Ingrow keeper but luck was against him.

Gargrave went out in the second half expecting a wind assisted win but an excellent strike from Ingrow saw them level the score. A good shot from Beckwith was saved by the impressive Ingrow keeper who was awarded the man of the match for the visitors. A close range goal took the West Yorkshire side into the lead 2-3. The keeper made another good save from a Harry Thompson shot whilst at the other end of play Ingrow increased their lead to 2-4. Quick reactions again from the visiting keeper saw him save another Gargrave shot whilst a defensive error gifted Ingrow their fifth and final goal of the game. Gargrave continued to press for another goal with a shot going wide and another strike hitting the bar.

The visitors second goal came fifteen minutes from the end of play when John Beckwith latched onto a good through ball and finished well. Tom Varey scored the third from a free kick which he curled into the top corner of the net. Man of the match for Gargrave was Ben Wilson.
