Gargrave AFC

Gargrave 4 – 2 Waddington

August 31, 2008

Gargrave produced a great display in order to record their first win of the new season.

Gargrave started brightly and a superb piece of interchange set Oliver Hurst free who then found Christian Moon with a wonderful throughball. Christian Moon made no mistake, controlling well then placing the ball into the corner of the net for his fifth goal of the season so far. Gargrave then dropped off a little and allowed Waddington to play, the equaliser came from a terrific volley by Waddington’s no.6 from twenty yards out. Gargrave once again upped the tempo with Moon in terrific form and it was he who found Ben Brown in space and he made no mistake from 10 yards out to make it 2-1 to the home-side.

In the second half Gargrave raised their game to antoher level. The front three of Brown, Wilkin and Moon terrorised the Waddington defence and with jameson and Hurst on hand to support Waddington found themselves pegged back in their own half. It took till 65 minutes, though, for Gargrave to add to the scoreline, a tenacious run by Jonathan Chapman was cut short by lunging tackle by the Waddington defender, the result a penalty kick. Ben Brown dispatched this was cool precision. Moments later Ben Brown broke the offside trap and should have had a penalty when he was brought down in the area, the referee had other ideas and a free-kick on the edge of the area was awarded. This made little difference to Gargrave, however, they refused to play out the game and some intricate passing on the left eventually led to Hurst being free on the edge of the area, he fired the ball in the bottom corner to make it 4-1. Waddngton did not stop fighting and did get a penalty of their own late on, this was fired wildly wide. They did get a reward for their endeavour, however, scoring a consolation goal with the last kick of the game.

A special mention to Liam Jameson for his man-of-the-match performance, a real captain’s display. Should’ve been capped by a goal but closing your eyes and heading it straight up in the air is nearly as good.

Well done boys…..but still more improvements to be made

Gargrave Reserves 2 – 0 Bradley FC

August 28, 2008

Gargrave looked a much more balanced side in their second game of the season. The defence remained solid, well marshalled by the experienced Adrian Eyles and complemented by a solid performance from Richard Scott. The young legs of Mattie Simpson in attack caused many a problem for the oppositions back men.

Gargrave scored a goal in each half. The first came from Harry Thompson, a one on one with the keeper,  slotted into the bottom left of the net. The second goal came courtesy of assistant manager Sam Ashby with a well placed header.

Settle United 12 – 0 Gargrave Res

August 28, 2008

The reserve squad knew their game against former East Lancashire side Settle United was always going to be their toughest challenge of the season. The players had not had the advantage of any friendly games and this was the first time they had been on a pitch together. There was a double whammy at the eleventh hour when one of the clubs regular keepers was unavoidably held up and could not get to the match. Midfielder Andrew Foulds bravely stepped into the breach.

Settle were always in control but Gargrave battled on in a game which the debut players and their aching limbs will remember for a long time. Man of the match was Simon Boatwright playing in his eleventh consecutive season for the club ( do not let his youthful good looks deceive you ). Despite the scoreline there were some positive performances and new manager Jimmy McLachlan looks forward to the next game which is on Wednesday evening, 27th August, at home to Bradley. Kick Off 6.30.p.m.

Hellifield Sports 7 – 6 Gargrave AFC

August 19, 2008

It was goals a plenty in the local derby clash against old rivals Hellifield Sports in the first game of the new season.

Hellifield were quickly out of the blocks with a close range header from Steven Procter. Ben Brown squared the ball for Christian Moon to level. Richard Orme volleyed in Gargraves second from the near post. Carl Stanford was quick to level the scores again with a controlled lob. A quick throw in was neatly flicked on by Ben Brown for Moon to volley home and take the visitors into the lead. Hellifield replied with a cruel deflection. Level pegging again! Ben Brown made no mistake with an angled shot to put Gargrave into a 4-3 lead at half time.

Moon notched up another on the score sheet but Carl Stanford beat the Gargrave defence once more. A goal mouth scramble from the hosts brought the scores level again. Stanford hit a superb shot to put Hellifield back in the driving seat but Gargrave were not finished as their man of the match Christian Moon scored his fourth of the game. The thirteenth and winning goal of the game came from last years premiership player of the year, Carl Stanford.

Final score 7-6 to Hellifield. An entertaining start to the season with end to end action, but it just goes to prove thirteen is lucky for some but unlucky for others!

Settle Utd 2 – 2 Gargrave

August 7, 2008

Gargrave travelled to North Craven to play Settle Utd in a friendly match on Thursday evening.

Settle opened the scoring. Gargrave equalised through Simon Boatwright. Unfortunately for Simon, friendly goals do not count in the seasons top goal scorers chart. Jonathan Chapman put the visitors ahead with a close range lob which pre-empted a joyous celebration. Settle equalised in the last five minutes when a high shot/cross left the keeper Stewart Wilson with poached egg on his face.

Gargrave 2 – 3 Pendle Forest

August 5, 2008

Pendle Forest secured a strong 3 – 2 win over Gargrave in a friendly match on Tuesday evening. They opened the scoring and Gargraves leveller came via a Ben Brown penalty. The home sides second goal was neatly despatched by Paul Wilkin after Christian Moon had outpaced the Pendle defence.

Gargrave 5 – 3 Skipton Town

August 2, 2008

Gargrave hosted a friendly Derby game on Saturday versus Skipton Town.

Town arrived with a large squad of players whilst Gargrave could only field eleven men as six of their players were taking part in a 5 a side competition at Rolls Royce FC (congratulations to the Gargrave team who won the competition, beating Trawden in the final).

There was little to choose between the two teams in the first half but Tom Varey was able to break the stalemate minutes from the half time whistle with a neatly placed shot. A free kick from Joel Timmins hit the defensive wall and Varey was on hand to hit the rebound. The hosts lead increased when Liam Jamesons header hit the spot. Skipton Towns fresh legs created two goals in quick succession but  Jamesons thirty yard screamer put Gargrave 4-2 ahead. Skipton Town replied with their third. Tom Varey claimed his hat trick with an eighteen yard lob and sealed victory,a hard working performance from all the players and Geoff had a good game too.

The next friendly is at home on Tuesday evening Vs Pendle Forest.

Howden Clough Vs Gargrave

July 26, 2008

Gargrave AFC had originally arranged to host a friendly match against the West Yorkshire side of Howden Clough. However due to ground unavailability, the roles were reversed and the Craven side made the journey to Batley sports centre on Saturday ( 26th July ) . Gargrave were to face a side playing at a higher level than themselves,  with teams in the West Yorkshire premier and the Spen Valley League.

The visitors took the lead with a tap in from Sam Watson , Howden Clough replied with two goals to take the advantage. Al Tudhope levelled the scoring with another tap in. The win was sealed for Gargrave when Liam Jameson scored from a free kick with minutes to go.

An excellent team performance from all players with a special mention for Liam Jameson and Kristian Hodgson.A memorable win in sweltering conditions. A big thank you to Howden Clough for their kind hospitality and best wishes to them for a successful season.
