Celebrating 100 years of Craven District Football Association….

February 26, 2010

Last year the Craven FA celebrated a century of football, the association was formed in 1909 at a meeting in the Midland Hotel, Skipton.

A book documenting the history of both the association and all member clubs  was compiled last year by Mr. Allan Cawood, President of the Craven FA.  The publication is illustrated by many old team photographs ( Gargrave are represented by team photographs from 1927/28 when they were the Craven League and Craven Cup winners  and a team photograph from 1936/37. Both kindly loaned by Dennis French ). All nineteen member clubs are represented in the book, documenting the highs and lows over the years. There are also sections on the Referee`s, footballing families, Craven characters and much much more.

The book is priced at £5.00 and there is also a DVD which displays many more of the old Craven footballing photographs, the DVD is priced at a £1.00.

Copies can be purchased from the pavilion on match days or alternately please contact Caroline.

Oakworth FC 1 – 3 Gargrave Reserves

February 21, 2010

A  welcome three points for Gargrave Reserves who have been thwarted with bad luck for most of the season. Man of the match Paul Wilkin took the lead with a long range strike. The visitors continued to play some decent football but a penalty in the first half of stoppage time allowed Oakworth to level.

The hosts came out strong in the second half but found the Gargrave defence hard to penetrate. A good run from Matt Brown was abruptly halted by an Oakworth defender and a penalty was awarded and duly despatched by Brown. Oakworth began to tire on the heavy pitch and Brown took advantage with a one on one with the keeper to score a third for Gargrave. Man of the match for Oakworth was Joe Slater.

The Reserves will visit Chatburn FC on Saturday for a league game whilst the First team will be at home in the Northern Plant Hire Trophy vs Rolls Royce. The Plant Hire Trophy game will kick off at 1.30.p.m.

Morrison Cup game – off….

February 20, 2010

Unfortunately due to the ground conditions we have had to call off the Morrison Cup game ( again ). The frozen pitch would not take any studs at twelve noon so there was no alternative but to call the fixture off. Disappointing for both sides particularly when otherwise the pitch is in very good heart.

Gargrave Reserves 1 – 8 Skipton LMS Reserves

February 15, 2010

Gargrave started brightly with the first chance of the game going to Jonathan Chapman after some good interplay between Nick Kendall and Stuart Dollan. LMS went just wide and then a free kick was sent over the bar. The visitors best chance was thwarted by some excellent defending by Aidie Eyles. A goal mouth scramble created the first goal for LMS  when the ball just trickled over the line inches away from a defenders extended leg. Gargrave continued to attack with a lob from Jodie Lonsdale saved and a shot from Lonsdale just wide. Stuart Dollan was on target but again the shot was saved. Michael McLoughlan tried a shot but again the Gargrave luck or seasons lack of it was against them. likewise a long range effort from Lonsdale. An easy shot from LMS gave them a 2-0 lead and a defensive error gifted them a third. Gargrave cricket legend Ed Stanley weaved his way into the box and scored a well taken goal to lift the hosts spirits and keep them in with a chance. 3-1 at half time.

Gargrave came out in the second half the stronger of the two squads but their chances just lacked the finishing composure. Any attacks from LMS seemed to result in a goal and the visitors were soon 6-1 to the good. To Gargraves credit they never relented in their play and continued to pressurize LMS throughout the half. A long range shot from defender Ben Ashby went over the bar but LMS came back scoring a further two against the run of play. Ben Ashbys free kick was on target but was headed out by an LMS defender. A game where LMS deserved the points but perhaps not by the margin. Nick Kendall made a welcome return to the squad after injury and was awarded the man of the match award.

The Reserves are away at Oakworth next Saturday.

Rolls Royce FC 6 – 3 Gargrave AFC

February 15, 2010

Gargrave took the lead against a well organised Rolls Royce side when Paul Wilkin scored from a one on one with the keeper. Rolls equalised and then created a couple more goals. Joel Timmins scored the visitors second with a close range header and Ben Brown added a third from a free kick but it was not enough to take any points from the game with Rolls having a final tally of six goals. Man of the match for Gargrave was defender Matt Brennand.

February 13, 2010

The Craven FA Morrison Cup game on the 20th February at home to Long Preston FC will kick off at 2.p.m not 1.30p.m as first thought.

Bradley FC 2 – 1 Gargrave Reserves

February 8, 2010

Gargrave`s  run of bad luck continued even though they had much of the play but the ball would just not go in the back of the net. The Bradley keeper was on good form and saved numerous chances from the visitors over the ninety minute period. Play was difficult for both teams on the heavy pitch but Bradley scored a couple in the first half to give them a good advantage at half time.

Gargrave had the upper hand in the second half and Paul Wilkin pulled one back with a good finish. Despite the visitors best efforts an equaliser was not to be and the score remained at 2-1 in Bradleys favour. Another disappointing day when at least a share of the points would have been fair but there is much to play for yet and time for some good luck to return.
