Gargrave AFC 2 – 3 Barnoldswick Barons

October 29, 2012

Gargrave were hosts to Barnoldswick Barons in the second round of  The Northern Plant Hire Trophy.

The Barons opened the scoring from a free kick from ten yards out which found the goal through a sea of players. The lack lustre game continued with neither side really creating any real chances. Matthew Simpson had a shot but it was lacking in any power. A penalty was awarded to Gargrave after a player was brought down in the area but John Beckwiths shot was saved. A header from Simpson hit the bar. Barnoldswick Barons increased their lead to 2-0 when they successfully converted a penalty shot.

Some good passing moves from the hosts was soon rewarding them with their first goal courtesy of Tom Varey.A close range header from defender Matthew Brennand levelled the scores.

Minutes from time Barnoldswick Barons managed that all important goal nudged in from the goal line.

Embsay Reserves 5 – 1 Gargrave Reserves

October 29, 2012

Gargrave started slowly and were punished by Embsay with their quick wingers and strikers causing problems from the off and the visitors soon found themselves facing a 3-0 deficit. Gargrave did have their chances in the first half. Andy Seddon was only denied by a good save from the keeper and Richard Orme came close with a bullet diving header which went just wide. Gargrave conceded one more before the break when a long shot from outside the box caught their keeper off guard.

The side came out fighting in the second half and played some good football. Josh Town scored a consolation goal sneaking in at the back post but as Gargrave continued to push forwards they were caught on the break and Embsay scored their fifth of the afternoon.

Skipton LMS Reserves 1 – 0 Gargrave Reserves

October 21, 2012

Gargrave made the short trip to Skipton on Saturday as they faced Skipton LMS Reserves.

Gargrave started brightly and some good first time passing had LMS on the back foot. Simon Boatwright had a good chance to open the scoring but his volley was hit straight at the LMS keeper.

Gargrave dominated the first half with Richard Orme and Simon Boatwright providing some great through balls but the Gargrave front line just lacked that cutting edge.

The second half was a completely different story as LMS came out much stronger and looked more threatening, pegging Gargrave back for much of the half. Stand in keeper Dan Thompson was forced to make some good saves to stop LMS taking the lead. Gargrave were reduced to counter attacks only, but the high defensive line of LMS worked well and the Gargrave forwards were caught offside for the majority of the time. Lee Dent chanced a speculative shot from twenty five yards which almost reached the LMS net.

The deadlock was finally broken ten minutes from time when a long ball caught out the Gargrave defence and the LMS forward found himself through on goal. Dan Thompson made a great save initially but the ball broke kindly for the forward who scuffed it over the line.

A share of the points would probably have been a fairer result particularly after Gargraves superior first half performance . Debutant fullbacks Gaz Lord and Garth Beckwith both had solid games in the Gargrave colours.

Gargrave AFC 3 – 1 Barnoldswick Town Utd

October 20, 2012

Gargrave were hosts to East Lancashire side Barnoldswick Town Utd in the first round of the Craven FA  Craven Challenge Cup.

Gargrave got off to a flying start scoring two goals in the early exchanges. Liam Jameson with a well placed close range strike and Matthew Simpson with a header.

Barnoldswick began to settle and scored a superb shot on the volley from a corner ball. Barnoldswick competed well in the second half of play enjoying much of the possession.Gargrave hit the bar and a penalty awarded to Barnoldswick went high and wide of target. Both teams squandered their chances from then on but fortunately for the hosts they had the advantage of a slender lead.

A close range shot towards the end of play from Thomas Varey gave Gargrave a 3-1 home win and it was game over for the newly formed team, Barnoldswick Town Utd.
